Stephen Smartt joins LSST Science Advisory Committee

Important new role for LSST:UK Project Scientist

We are delighted to announce that our LSST: UK Project Scientist, Stephen Smartt, has been invited to sit on the LSST Science Advisory Committee. The SAC is the high level committee that the LSST Project formed to provide broad and independent science advice and vision to guide the survey mission. It is made up of 15 scientists from the US and Chile chosen to cover the broad remit of science activities that LSST will support. To reflect the important international dimension that the project now has, and to recognise the UK’s significant investment as a leading partner, the Project invited Stephen as one of the first international representatives to sit on the panel. This recognises his leadership in wide-field transient surveys, supernovae and the new field of multi-messenger astronomy, all of which LSST will revolutionise.  It is a three-year term starting immediately and the first important task of the SAC is to review the Survey Cadence whitepapers that are being developed by the Science Collaborations.
